Needle Weaving on Knits

Lily Chin

Sunday PM

Apply some techniques borrowed from weaving into your work. Learn 5 ways of applying separate strands to knitting after the fact to colorize easily. See what stitches are “ripe” for weaving into. The bonus is that many of these methods are reversible. Chart everything up ahead of time and “preview” the results. Use up all your scrap yarns in the process. Stretch is usually minimized, so use these for rugs, pillows, placemats and hand bags as well as the ubiquitous scarves, shawls, afghans and more.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials Fee: None

28-cast-on

Student Supplies:

  • Please bring a few yards of smooth scrap yarn in worsted and bulky weights, many colors.
  • Darning or tapestry needles, the longer the better. I especially like Susan Bates’ “Weaving Needle” (12.5 cm or 5 inches), article # 14085. www.coatsandclark.com
  • Optional: A wide-tooth comb like an afro-pick.
