Unique Latvian Mitten Cuffs

Unique Latvian Mitten Cuffs

Beth Brown-Reinsel

Thursday AM

Some of the beautiful mitten cuffs of Latvia will be studied in this class. Three types of knitted cuffs will be started in class to learn these unique techniques. Students can then complete the wristers outside of class, or choose to create mittens from the cuffs. The following techniques will be covered: a fringed cuff, the twisted garter edge, and biased ribbing. Information about Latvian mittens will be discussed: the history of Latvia mitten knitting, other design details used such as braids, the waste-yarn (“afterthought” thumb), and pointed-tip shaping.

Skill Level: Intermediate. Must be proficient with double-pointed needles. Students may also use Magic Loop or two circulars.

Material fee: $3.00 for color handout, at least 10 pages long.

Student Supplies:
• 2 oz each of 4 colors of worsted weight yarn. Wool is best to hold the fringe. Please don't choose synthetics or superwash wool–they are too slippery.
• One set of size 4.0mm/US 6 dpn, 15 to 20 cm/6 t 8" long. (If you prefer working with Magic Loop or two circulars, please bring the appropriate needles.) It is also helpful to bring a circular needle of any size, at least 60 cm/20-24" to use in making the fringe.
• Stitch markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn.
